Monday Offseason Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Open Forum

Frederik Storm and Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers scored the goals and goaltender Sebastian Dahm stopped all 26 shots to lead Denmark to a 2-0 win over host Norway. The Danes earned a spot in the 2022 Beijing Olympics and will be placed in Group B with the Czech Republic, Russia and Switzerland. It will Denmark’s first-ever appearance in the Olympics.

Libor Hudachek scored the game-winning goal with 3:17 left in regulation to lift host Slovakia to a 2-1 victory over Belarus and into the Olympic Games. Peter Cehlarik scored the first goal for the Slovaks and set up Hudachek’s marker. Goaltender Branislav Konrad stopped 21 of 22 shots. New Jersey Devils prospect Yegor Sharangovich scored the only goal for Belarus.

Host Latvia is also heading to Beijing after a 2-1 win over pesky France. Rihards Bukarts and Miks Indrasis scored the goals and Ivars Punnevos turned away 29 of 30 shots. Slovakia and Latvia will be in Group C with Finland and Sweden.

In other games, Anze Kopitar scored a goal and set up three others in Slovenia’s 4-1 win over South Korea. Slovenia finished in third place in Group F.

Hungary took third place in Group E with a 2-1 victory over Italy. Gergo Nagy and Akos Nihaly scored the goals and goaltender Miklos Rajna stopped 29 of 30 shots,

Brian Lebler scored twice to power Austria to a 4-1 win over Poland. The Austrians finished in third place in Group D.

Women’s World Championship

Russia scored twice in the third period to edge Germany 3-2. Oxana Bratisheva scored the winning goal 6:18 into the final frame and Nadezhda Morozova finished the game with 15 saves.

Nana Fujimoto stopped 31 shots to backstop Japan to a 3-2 win over the Czech Republic. Akane Shiga scored the eventual game-winning goal 6:02 into the third period.

Russia and Japan will play for fifth place and a spot in Group A in next year’s tournament on Tuesday. The Czech Republic finished the tournament in seventh place while Germany came in eighth place.

NHL signings

The Ottawa Senators signed restricted free agent goaltender Filip Gustavsson to a two-year contract. Gustavsson’s new deal is two-way in the first season and one-way in the final year. The 23-year-old went 5-1-2 with a 2.16 GAA and .933 save percentage in nine appearances with the Senators in 2020-21. (Silver Seven Sens)
