Another slow summer day has passed and the month of July, which started off a bang is the books, is now over.

There was a smattering of offseason news yesterday. Let’s take a look, shall we?

The Montreal Canadiens signed 22-year-old defenseman Kaiden Guhle to a six-year contract extension worth $33.3 million. The final two years of the contract, which beings in 2025-26, carry a modified no-trade clause. Guhle posted six goals and 22 points, 178 blocked shots, 116 hits and 56 penalty minutes in 70 games last season.

After terminating his contract with the Carolina Hurricanes two weeks ago, Evgeny Kuznetsov will return to Russia to continue his playing career, signing a four-year contract with SKA Saint Petersburg of the KHL. Kuznetsov had a combined 13 points in 30 games in a limited role with the Hurricanes in the 2023-24 regular season and playoffs after he was acquired from the Washington Capitals at the trade deadline.

Team USA was beaten 5-3 by Finland at the World Junior Summer Showcase yesterday. Today is an off-day at the event. On Friday, Florida Panthers prospects Linus Eriksson, Olof Glifford, Simon Zether and Albert Wikman and the rest of Team Sweden will face the host Americans, while Canada will enter the fray and take on the Finns.
