The Charlotte Checkers have re-signed goaltender Evan Cormier a one-year, one-way AHL contract.

Cormier, 27, handled the bulk of the workload for Charlotte’s ECHL affiliate, the Savannah Ghost Pirates last season, going 17-13-4 with a 3.38 goals-against average and an .887 save percentage.

Over his career, the 2016 fourth-round pick (105th overall) of the New Jersey Devils has played in 59 AHL games and logged a 21-27-9 record with a 3.18 goals-against average and an .894 save percentage. Cormier – who is heading into his third season in the Florida organization and lifted the Stanley Cup with the Panthers last season as the third goalie during their run – has made six appearances for the Checkers, all during the 2023-24 season.

The United States U18 team won the Hlinka Gretzky Cup for the just the second time ever, and first time since 2003, by beating Sweden 5-3 on Saturday. Canada took bronze with a 3-0 victory over Finland.

The Detroit Red Wings made a late-summer unrestricted free agent signing on Friday, inking defenseman Travis Hamonic to a one-year deal worth $1 million. Hamonic, who turned 35 today, appeared in 59 games with the Ottawa Senators in 2024-25. He scored one goal and collected six assists to go along with 19 PIM. The long-time veteran brings 900 games of NHL experience to the Red Wings organization.

The Columbus Blue Jackets re-signed defenseman Daemon Hunt to a one-year, two-way contract that pays $775K at the NHL level. Columbus acquired Hunt from the Minnesota Wild on November 30, 2024. After the trade, the 23-year-old put up two goals and 14 points in 48 games with the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters.
