Saturday Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Open Forum

The Florida Panthers will not be part of tonight’s busy slate in the NHL. The Cats are off until tomorrow night when they face the Montreal Canadiens at what should be a pretty full BB&T Center.

Last night’s scores were unkind to the Cats as the Boston Bruins blanked the Anaheim Ducks 3-0, the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-1; the New York Rangers whipped the Buffalo Sabres 6-2 (at least this one didn’t go past regulation); and the New Jersey Devils edged the Minnesota Wild 5-4 in overtime.

In an interesting late night trade, the Philadelphia Flyers acquired veteran goaltender Cam Talbot from Edmonton for younger keeper Anthony Stolarz.

In the AHL, the Springfield Thunderbirds were beaten 4-1 on home ice last night by the Charlotte Checkers. Dryden Hunt scored only goal for the Thunderbirds late in the third period, a power-play marker assisted by defensemen Jacob MacDonald and Chris Wideman.  Samuel Montembeault stopped 34 of 37 shots in the loss.

The Thunderbirds (21-21-6-4) have lost five in a row and tumbled to seventh place in the Atlantic Division, seven points out of a playoff spot. Springfield will play host to the Toronto Marlies tonight.
