Wednesday Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Open Forum

The Florida Panthers are scheduled for an 11 a.m. practice on Wednesday at the Panthers IceDen in Coral Springs.

Florida is currently in sixth place in the Atlantic Division. Not quite the start we were looking for, but with two tilts against the Tampa Bay Lightning and four of the six games on the road, six points in six games isn’t too bad.

Our next opponent, the Colorado Avalanche, will be in Pittsburgh tonight to take on the Penguins in the second game of a six-game road trip. The Avs routed the Washington Capitals 6-3 to start the trip on Monday.

A scan of our 2019 draft class finds first-rounder goaltender Spencer Knight with a 2-0 record and a 1.50 GAA with one shutout for Boston College. Knight is sporting a .954 save percentage.

Steve Principi of SBN’s BC Interruption had this to say about Knight:

Spencer Knight played both games for BC over the weekend, and he was fantastic.

Knight made some incredible saves on Friday night in BC’s 5-3 win over Wisconsin. Two of the three goals he allowed were on Wisconsin power plays, where another first round pick, Cole Caufield, ripped perfect shots past BC’s goalie. The third goal was on a shorthanded breakaway that barely snuck past him.

On Sunday, Knight was perfect. He went 39/39 on saves and shut down Colgate for his first collegiate shutout. He was positionally sound and his rebound control was excellent all weekend.

Knight was highly touted coming in as the highest drafted goalie since 2010, and he showed why in his first two college starts. It’s fun to imagine how good he can be if he sticks around for a few seasons.

Flint Firebirds (OHL) defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok has a goal and five assists in seven games.

Defenseman  John Ludvig has bagged six goals and five assists in nine games for the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks.

Forward  Cole Schwindt has registered three goals and seven assists in eight OHL games for the Mississauga Steelheads.

Defenseman Carter Berger has one assist in two games for the University of Connecticut.

Forward Henry Rybinski has picked up four assists in seven games for the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds.

Forward  Owen Lindmark has totaled a goal ad two assists in two games for the University of Wisconsin.

Kitchener Rangers forward Greg Meireles has racked up two goals and five helpers in five OHL games.

Seattle Thunderbirds forward Matthew Wedman has a goal and two assists in five games. Wedman is already -10, so that needs improvement.
