Florida Panthers reassign Rocco Grimaldi to AHL San Antonio
Roster decisions will continue as injured players progress.
With an eye toward one or two injured players returning to the roster by Monday, Florida sent rookie forward Rocco Grimaldi back to San Antonio after a quick three-game stint, which included his first NHL goal Saturday at Nashville. From the club:
SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers Executive Vice-President and General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has reassigned F Rocco Grimaldi to the San Antonio Rampage (AHL).
Grimaldi, 21, scored his first National Hockey League goal last night in Florida’s 3-2 shootout loss to the Nashville Predators. The Rossmoor, California, native has played in seven games for the Panthers season, scoring one goal with 18 shots, while logging 12:36 TOI. He has appeared in 13 games with San Antonio this season registering six points (3-3-6).
Grimaldi was drafted by Florida in the second round (33rd overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft.
It's again a numbers issue with four forwards - Sean Bergenheim, Scottie Upshall, Brandon Pirri and Dave Bolland - skating and set to resume game action soon, so expectation of a trade or two in the coming few weeks isn't ridiculous.
Among the veterans up front (and we're ignoring the most recent batch of summer signees) only Tomas Kopecky and Bergenheim lack no-trade clauses, though Tomas Fleischmann and Upshall (along with Bergenheim) are in the final year of their respective deals. It's long been theorized that at least two of the names above will be moved by the trade deadline (Kopy & Flash, anyone?) but with a guy like Vincent Trocheck probably on the radar as next to be reassigned, management may be looking to move a few bodies - hopefully to the Western Conference - for pennies on the dollar.
