The Florida Panthers have recalled veteran defenseman Shane O'Brien from the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL. It's assumed the 31-year-old most likely be filling in tonight for Aaron Ekblad, who missed yesterday's practice with lower body soreness, although the rookie says he'll be playing against the Red Wings. Regardless, with the Panthers carrying only six defensemen after trading Colby Robak to Anaheim, insurance on the blue line is needed right now.
In 19 games with San Antonio this season, O'Brien has posted offensive totals of 5 goals and 9 assists to along with a -4 rating and 40 PIM.
