NHL Offseason Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Saturday Open Forum

The World Junior Summer Showcase concludes today in Plymouth, MI. Florida Panthers prospect Spencer Knight should be in goal for the United States while forward Serron Noel may or may not be in the lineup for Canada when the two rivals tangle this afternoon.

The Americans could have used Knight’s services yesterday as they were beaten 6-5 by Finland, despite out-shooting the Finns 51-21. Not a good day for starter Isaiah Seville, who gave four goals on 10 shots, and Dustin Wolf, who was beaten twice on seven shots in relief.

Canada bounced back from its ugly loss to Finland on Wednesday with a 5-2 win over Sweden. Noel, who scored two goals against the Finns, did not figure in the scoring or have a shot on goal and finished the tilt with an even rating.

It was a pretty quiet Friday around the NHL…

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed veteran winger Matt Read to a PTO. Read played in 12 games for the Minnesota Wild and 61 for AHL Iowa last season. (Pension Plan Puppets)

Linus Ullmark went to arbitration with the Buffalo Sabres yesterday. The 26-year-old goalie and the club were almost $2 million apart when they exchanged salary arbitration figures ahead of the hearing. Ullmark submitted that he should be paid $2.65 million while Buffalo offered a salary of $800,000. (Buffalo News)
