Florida Panthers sign MacKenzie Weegar to entry-level deal

After tearing up the QMJHL this year with the Halifax Mooseheads, puck-moving defenseman MacKenzie Weegar has signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers. The Cats drafted Weegar in the seventh round (206th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Weegar just completed his second QMJHL season with the Mooseheads. In 61 games, he amassed 12 goals and 47 assists while racking up 97 PIM. During the playoffs, the slick defender continued to provide the offense by posting an impressive 5 goals and 17 assists in 16 games. Halifax was bounced in the league semifinals by eventual champions, Val-d’Or.

GM Dale Tallon has been previously quoted as saying that Weegar will quarterback the power play in the future, and that he has been very pleased with the progress the young defenseman has made since the Cats drafted him.
