Florida Panthers goalie prospect Spencer Knight finished with 22 saves and registered the first complete shutout of the 2019 World Junior Summer Showcase in Team USA’s 6-0 rout of Sweden. Arthur Kaliyev (Los Angeles Kings) scored twice and the Americans also got goals from John Beecher (Boston Bruins), Blake McLaughlin (Anaheim Ducks), Nick Robertson (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Trevor Zegras (Anaheim Ducks). Knight has stopped 48 out of the 49 shots he has seen in his two starts.
Seven different Finnish players recorded multi-point games to lead Finland to a easy 8-3 win over Canada, Serron Noel was a bright spot for the Canadians. Noel scored back-to-back goals in the second period with his team down 7-0. He finished the game with two shots, 4 PIM and a -1 rating.
There are no games scheduled today at the WJSS. On Friday, Canada will play Sweden at 1 p.m. and the U.S. will take on Finland at 4 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on NHL Network.
Hockey Headlines
The New Jersey Devils have avoided arbitration with restricted free agent Will Butcher by signing the defenseman to a new three-year, $11.2 million contract. Butcher produced 30 points in 78 games last season. (All About The Jersey)
The Colorado Avalanche have signed defenseman Samuel Girard to a seven-year contract extension worth $35 million. His new deal will kick in in 2020-21 once he plays out the final year of his entry-level contract. (Mile High Hockey)
The Vegas Golden Knights have signed forward Marcus Kallionkieli to an entry-level contract. Kallionkieli was taken in the fifth round in June. He spent last season with the Sioux City Musketeers if the USHL, where he put 53 points in 58 games. (Las Vegas Review-Journal)
