Preseason Recap: Lightning pull away for 6-2 victory over Panthers

Prospect Mathieu Joseph scored two goals and added an assist in the Tampa Bay Lightning’s 6-2 victory over the Florida Panthers Thursday night at Amway Center in Orlando.

Tampa Bay also got goals from defenseman Victor Hedman, and forwards Anthony Cirelli, Yanni Gourde and Alexander Volkov.

Juho Lammikko scored his first of the preseason, putting home the rebound of an Aaron Ekblad shot 6:27 into the first period to knot the score at one apiece after Hedman’s game-opening goal.

Frank Vatrano notched the other Panthers goal with a power-play tally at the 2:09 mark of the third period. Troy Brouwer and Henrik Borgstrom picked up the assists on the play.

Vatrano’s goal cut the deficit to 3-2, but Joseph scored his first of the game, on a power play, at 10:16 to restore the Lightning’s two-goal advantage.

Volkov lit the lamp a minute later and Joseph completed the scoring with 4:55 left in regulation.

Louis Domingue picked up the win with a  strong 36-save performance. Roberto Luongo finished with 26 saves on 32 shots.

The two Florida-based teams will finish off the preseason slate on Saturday night in Sunrise.

  • Denis Malgin finished with a game-high seven shots on goal. New acquistion Mike Hoffman had five.
  • Rookie Henrik Borgstrom was the only Cat skater to post a -3 rating.
  • Alex Killorn and Brayden Point each had two assists for the Bolts./
