Florida Panthers to use standard buyout on defenseman Filip Kuba

According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, the Florida Panthers will use a standard buyout on the final year of defenseman Filip Kuba’s contract.

As per Cap Geek, Kuba’s original $4 million cap hit for this season will now be spread out over two seasons and will count $1.2 million against the Panthers’ total cap space for the 2013-14 season and $1.4 million the following season. Using the standard buyout saves the club the option of using the two compliance buyouts that will not count against the cap. The compliance buyouts can be used either this offseason of next offseason.

Kuba signed a two-year, $8 million deal to rejoin the Panthers, the team that originally drafted him, on July 1, 2012 after stints with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Minnesota Wild and Ottawa Senators.

The Czech-born defender played in 44 games for Cats during the shortened 2013 season. He scored one goal and added nine assist while finishing the campaign with a -18 rating.
