NHL Offseason Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Tuesday Open Forum

The Calgary Flames are one step closer to a replacement for the aging Saddledome. The team. the city and the Calgary Stampede have agreed on terms for an event center that would serve as the new home for the Flames. The estimated cost of the proposed 19,000-seat venue is $550 million CDN. The bill would be split equally between the city and Calgary Sports and Entertainment, the entity which owns the Flames, the Hitmen of the WHL, the CFL Stampeders and National Lacrosse League’s Roughnecks. City Council is expected to vote on proposed deal next week. If approved, shovels would go into the ground in 2021 with expected opening coming in 2024.

Hockey Headlines

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Zach Aston-Reese avoided arbitration with a new deal two-year deal that will pay the 24-year-old forward $1 million per season. Aston-Reese put up 17 points in 43 games with Pittsburgh last season. (Pensburgh)

Mirco Mueller and the New Jersey Devils also came to terms before a scheduled arbitration hearing, with the 24-year-old defenseman inking a one-year contract worth $1.4 million. Mueller appeared in 53 big-league games in 2018-19. (All About The Jersey)

The Boston Bruins signed 19-year-old center Pavel Shen to a entry-level contract. Shen was selected in the seventh round of the 2018 Entry Draft. Shen appeared in 20 KHL last season and posted one assist. (Stanley Cup of Chowder)

The Buffalo Sabres and defenseman Evan Rodrigues have an arbitration scheduled for today. Rodrigues  played in 74 games and produced a career-high 29 points. (Die By The Blade)
