Scouting Report

The top of the standings in the Central division are jam packed as Tampa Bay, Florida and Carolina battle it out for first place. Florida and Carolina showed just how close these two teams are on Saturday with a great contest that needed extra time and a shootout to be decided. Martin Necas got the shootout winner for the Hurricanes which snapped their losing streak at three games. The Panthers and Hurricanes have split the first two games of the year with both games ending 4-3 and needing extra time. The Panthers showed resilience as they battled back to tie the game on two separate occasions, including a goal by Patric Hornqvist in the final two minutes. Hornqvist has been a superb addition to the Panthers contributing nine goals and nine assists in 20 games. Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov also deserve recognition as they lead the team in points with 24 and 21 respectively. Panthers coach Joel Quenneville commented after the game how he likes his team’s determination and ability to battle back. The Panthers have also done an incredible job to respond well after a loss. In fact, they are a perfect 6-0 in that situation this year. Look for Florida to get their revenge on Monday and find a way to get two points to split the two-game series.
