Gameday 16: Florida Panthers vs New Jersey Devils

Graphic design: Francisco Oporta

The Florida Panthers (11-3-1) host the New Jersey Devils (10-6-2) tonight in the first of two consecutive games at Amerant Bank Arena thanks to a quirky bit of scheduling from the NHL.

Florida was able to overcome a stern test from the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, edging John Tortorella’s club 4-3 to extend its current winning streak to seven games. Evan Rodrigues, who has a four-game point streak going, set up two goals in regulation and scored the decisive goal in the fifth round of the skills competition. Sergei Bobrovksy stopped 34 shots through overtime and made four more saves in the shootout to raise his record to 8-2-1. Speaking of point streaks, Sam Reinhart’s is up to seven games, captain Aleksander Barkov has at least a point in all five games he’s played since returning from a lower-body injury, and defenseman Niko Mikkola has a four-game assist streak.

While the Panthers are in first place in the Atlantic on their own merit, the Devils high standing in the Metropolitan Division is partially due to playing more games than Hurricanes, Capitals and Rangers. New Jersey dominated the San Jose Sharks in their last outing on Sunday, but went down 1-0 thanks to a stellar 44-save performance from discarded Devil Mackenzie Blackwood. Jesper Bratt leads the team in scoring with 19 points with Jack Hughes right behind him with 18.
