Nikolaj Ehlers scored his second goal of the game off the rush 3:29 into overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at Lenovo Center, evening the Eastern Conference Final at one game apiece. Eric Robinson opened the scoring on the game’s first shot on goal, and Jalen Chatfield and Mark Jankowski each had a pair of assists for the Hurricanes, who limited the Canadiens to a mere 12 shots. Josh Anderson scored both of the goals for Montreal.
IIHF World Championship
Sandis Vilmanis scored two empty-net goals and had the primary assist on Deniss Smirnovs’ third period game-winner in Latvia’s 4-2 victory over the United States in Zurich. Vilmanis logged 23:06 of ice time, was credited with three shots on goal, and posted a plus-three rating. He has produced two goals and six points in five games.
Matthew Tkachuk scored a deflection goal and added an assist for the struggling American squad. He finished with a game-high 12 shots, played 24:40, and ended up with a minus-two rating in his second game of the tournament.
Panthers prospect Marek Alscher registered three shots on goal and logged 17:27 of ice time in Czechia’s 3-2 win over rival Slovakia in Fribourg. The 22-year-old defenseman finished the tilt with a minus-one rating.
