Friday Offseason Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Open Forum

The Florida Panthers and six other Atlantic Division teams were happy to see the Ottawa Senators send star defenseman Erik Karlsson west to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.

The rebuilding Senators received center Chris Tierney and defenseman Dylan DeMelo, prospects forwards Rudolfs Balcers and Josh Norris, as well as a first-round draft pick (2019 or 2020) and a second-round pick in 2019. If the Sharks miss the playoffs in 2018-19, that first-rounder will be in 2019; otherwise, it’s a 2020 first-round pick that will go to Ottawa.

There are also two conditional picks involved in the trade:

  1. If the Sharks sign Karlsson to a contract extension, the Senators will receive San Jose’s second-round pick in 2021, which would be upgraded to a first round pick if the Sharks reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.
  2. If Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season, Ottawa will receive an additional first round pick no later than 2022.

That second stipulation shows that the Senators don’t want to see a repeat of what San Jose did by trading now-Panther Mike Hoffman back to an Eastern Conference team.

In addition to Karlsson, the Sharks picked up forward prospect Francis Perron, who spent last season with AHL Belleville, in the blockbuster deal.

The Karlsson deal wasn’t the only piece of big NHL news yesterday. The Dallas Stars signed center Tyler Seguin to an eight-year extension with an average annual value of $9.85 million. For more on the signing, visit Defending Big D.
