It will forever be an event of sorts – no matter how meaningless the game – when the Cats and Avs find themselves facing off against one another. The 1996 Stanley Cup Final is of course the centerpiece and Ground Zero for the rivalry but more recent examples do exist; Colorado winning the draft lottery in 2013, snaring the first-overall selection (eventually picking Nathan MacKinnon) from Florida (which took Aleksander Barkov) in the process, remains in the forefront of many fans’ minds. Just one more slap in the face, delivered via an automated league process (that’s my “out” for Buffalo’s loss in the lottery only a few months ago; hello Mr. Ekblad).
Both clubs have had a rocky start in the new campaign: the Avs have yet to score a victory at home while sporting an 11-goal differential – of the minus variety – overall while injuries to the goaltending corps had opponents dreaming of ECHL netminders holding the fort. Not to be the case tonight, as Reto Berra returns to firm up Colorado’s crease.
