Germany dumps USA in IIHF World Championship opener 2-1 (OT)

Before a record-breaking (and more importantly, home) crowd of 77,803, a rag-tag assemblage of players little known on our shores defeated Team USA by a score of 2-1, with Germany’s Felix Schutz netting the winner early in overtime. Florida goaltender Scott Clemmensen tended the American pipes, stopping 18 of 20 shots. Anaheim forward Ryan Carter scored Team USA’s lone goal.

Now that this debacle is behind us, does coach Scott Gordon pull the plug on Clemmer and turn over starting duties to St. Louis Blues prospect Ben Bishop, or hang tight with the veteran? Wouldn’t be unrealisitic – even if today had produced a win – to give either Bishop or Turku’s David Leggio a shot at USA’s next opponent, since Denmark is likely not striking too much fear into their collective heart.

And after that? Finland.

Stick with Clemmer for Game Two?
