Notes:

Florida D Steven Kampfer has (finally) been cleared by the medical stuff and is ready to return if coach Gerard Gallant decides to make any changes to the lineup that won Game 4…The waiting game continues on the status of injured C Vincent Trocheck…Islanders D Ryan Pulock, who has made an impact, is not in Sunrise and is expected to miss the remainder of the series…The last time New York won a Game 5 of any series was all the back on April 28, 1987 when they beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 at the Spectrum in a series they eventually lost in seven…The Panthers are 3-2 all-time in playoff Game 5’s…In a bit of organizational news, the Portland Pirates (A4) host the Hershey Bears (A1) tonight at Cross Insurance Arena to kick off a best-of-5 series.

NHL.com Preview:

The Islanders and Panthers enter Game 5 at BB&T Center on Friday tied 2-2 in the best-of-7 series. The first four games were decided by one goal, except for Florida’s 3-1 victory in Game 2 that had an empty-net goal, and each team has scored 11 goals besides that empty-netter. “We talked about it early on,” Gallant said Thursday. “There’s a one-goal difference in every game. I knew they were going to be tight games, and the teams are battling hard. You get behind, you battle back. It’s playoff hockey. You look at the two teams and you put them up on the chalkboard, there’s not a whole lot between the two teams. They’re both good, solid teams and it’s showing in the series so far.” (More)

Yahoo.com Preview:

Florida’s SAT Close rating (total of blocked and unblocked shots in one-goal or overtime situations at five-on-five) was a minus-99 in the regular season, ranking 18th in the league. It protected early leads plenty – 31 times it led after the first period, among the most in the NHL – by possessing the puck as much as possible rather than pressing to add more goals. The Panthers have taken it to the Islanders in this tight series, though. Their SAT Close rating is a playoff-leading plus-46, and that aggressiveness paid off Wednesday as Alex Petrovic scored the lone goal of the third to give them a 2-1 victory. (More)
