The 2016-17 NHL season gets underway tonight

The 2016-17 NHL season gets underway with four games on the opening-night slate tonight, all of the rivalry variety.

Number one overall pick in the draft, Auston Matthews, will make his debut when the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the Ottawa Senators.

The Edmonton Oilers will usher in a new era at the ultra-impressive Rogers Place when they play host to the Calgary Flames.

NBCSN has a doubleheader featuring the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks at 8 p.m. and the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks at 10:30.

Locally, we have to wait another day for the Florida Panthers season-opener against the New Jersey at BB&T Center, but at least we have some nice distractions to look forward to this evening.
