NHL Postseason Caterwaul: Hurricanes open up two-game lead on Islanders

Curtis McElhinney came in to relieve injured starter Petr Mrazek, who stopped 9 of 10 shots,  early in the second period and turned away all 17 shots he faced and Warren Foegele and Nino Niederreiter scored 48 seconds apart in the final frame to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders in Brooklyn. The Hurricanes opened up a two games to none series lead. Mathew Barzal scored the lone goal for the Islanders.

Tyson Barrie scored the go-ahead goal and set up two others as Colorado Avalanche evened its series with the San Jose Sharks with a 4-3 road win at SAP Center. Gabriel Landeskog, Matt Nieto and Nathan MacKinnon were the other Colorado goal-scores. Brent Burns notched two and Evander Kane also lit the lamp for the Sharks. Philipp Grubauer finished with 31 saves for the Avalanche.

Panthers prospects

Owen Tippett and the Saginaw Spirit were soundly beaten 5-1 by the Guelph Storm in Game 6 of the OHL Western Conference final. Tippett registered three shots on goal and for the second consecutive game finished with a -2 rating. Game 7 will be in Saginaw tonight. The winner of the series will advance to face the Ottawa 67s for the J. Ross Robertson Cup.

Aleksi Heponiemi and Karpat will take on HPK today in Game 5 of the Liiga final in Finland. The series is tied two games to games. Heponiemi has yet to collect a point in the final round.
