NHL Postseason Caterwaul: Hurricanes top Islanders in overtime on Staal goal

Jordan Staal scored 4:04 into overtime and Petr Mrezek stopped 31 shots for his fifth career postseason shutout in the Carolina Hurricanes 1-0 overtime win over the New York Islanders in Brooklyn. Staal managed to dent the twine from a sharp angle after Nino Niederreiter’s shot missed the net and came to him off the back boards. Islanders goaltender Robin Lehner also made 31 saves in the game.

The San Jose Sharks overcame a one-goal deficit with three straight goals in the second half of the second period to beat the Colorado Avalanche by a 5-2 count to take Game 1. Joe Thornton started the binge soon after the Sharks killed off a double-minor. Gustav Nyquist, Kevin Labanc, Brent Burns and Timo Meier scored the other San Jose goals. Burns also added three assists. Gabriel Bourque and Colin Wilson netted the Avalanche goals.

Panthers prospects

Owen Tippett and the Saginaw Spirit were blanked 4-0 on home ice by the Guelph Storm in Game 5 of the OHL Western Conference final. Tippett had two shots on goal and finished with a -2 rating. Game 6 will be in Guelph on Sunday afternoon. The winner of the series will advance to face the Ottawa 67s for the J. Ross Robertson Cup.

Aleksi Heponiemi and Karpat will take on HPK today in Game 4 of the Liiga final in Finland. Underdog HPK leads the series two games to one.
