NHL Postseason Caterwaul: Avalanche eliminate top seed in the West

The Colorado Avalanche joined the Columbus Blue Jackets as the second WC2 to advance to the second round of the 2019 NHL playoffs with a 5-1 over the host Calgary Flames. Colorado reeled off four straight wins after getting shut out in Game 1. Mikko Rantanen scored two goals and added an assist and Nathan MacKinnon set up three goals. Colin Wilson also scored twice for the Avs and Gabriel Landeskog opened the scoring 9:40 into the first period. T.J. Brodie notched the only goal for the Flames. Philipp Grubauer stopped 28 of 29 shots, including a penalty shot, as Colorado won a playoff series for the first time since 2008.

Auston Matthews and Kasperi Kapenen scored 2:12 apart midway through the third period as the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Boston Bruins by a 2-1 count. David Krejci scored with 44 seconds left in regulation to halve the deficit, but the Maple Leafs held on to take a three to two series lead. Kapenen picked up an assist on Matthews’ goals at 11:33 which broke a scoreless deadlock. Frederik Andersen stopped 20 shots while Tukkaa Rask made 25 saves for the Bruins.
