Tuesday Caterwaul: Florida Panthers GameDay Open Forum

Forward Marco Sturm has seen very limited playing time with the Florida Panthers throughout 2011-12, as nursing bumps and bruises has unfortunately become an all-too-common activity for the 17-year veteran since his trade from Vancouver in October. He’s been remarkably effective against the Maple Leafs over his career however, notching 13G-20A, 9PPP, & 2 GWG in 42 games with a plus-10.

Why last night rocked:

  • Didn’t affect our fate in any way, but Teemu Selanne‘s gorgeous game-tying power play goal late in the third period against Colorado lifted him into 19th place all-time in scoring (ironically knocking fellow Finn Jari Kurri into 20th). Dude just keeps defying age but remaining as relevant as at any time over the past decade.

Why last night jonesed:

  • BUF over MTL, 3-2 (OT): Twin-Tyler action for the Sabres, as Ennis (2G) and Myers (OT GWG/1A) prove too much for fragile Habs/

Panthers Playoff Update:

Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla, beyond the obvious:

Focusing on clubs within 5 points of Panthers (77P); teams FLA needs to lose in bold…

  • WSH (76P) at NYI, 7 p.m.: Isles lead season series 2-1; only loss – the last meeting – came in overtime/

Next up for the Cats:

  • Four-game homestand continues tonight vs Toronto; the LBC Game Thread learns that funding makes this bird go up at 7. Until then take a stroll around Pension Plan Puppets. Need Tickets for tonight’s match? Seats starting at $6 through TiqIQ./

Did you know:

  • Nine games on tonight’s NHL slate but only one will feature significant representation from every last club in the league under one roof. Oh, and the Leafs are in town./

On the table:

  • Consider this your primer for the day: GM Meetings! Boca Raton (or Rataaaan as is preferred on Home Ice)! Day One coverage! Here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and Dale’s keeping it casual for the press corps here./
