The Portland Pirates collected three out of a possible four points this weekend in road games in Providence and Bridgeport. The P-Bruins edged the Pirates 3-2 in overtime on Friday night before Portland bounced back to nip the Sound Tigers 2-1 on Saturday.
Providence 3, Portland 2 (OT)
Seth Griffith beat Mike McKenna unassisted 1:35 into overtime to give the P-Bruins a 3-2 win. After a scoreless first period, defenseman Sena Acolatse opened the scoring at 13:53 of the second from Wayne Simpson and Rob Schremp. Providence evened the game with 40 seconds left in frame on a power-play tally from Brandon DeFazio. The goal was set up by Matt Irwin and Zack Phillips. Max Talbot scored at 14:42 of the the third, with the assists going to Alexander Khokhlachev and Chris Breen, to give the home side the lead. Schremp would bag his eighth goal from Shane Harper and Mike Matheson with 2:11 remaining to get Portland a point. McKenna finished with 28 saves, while winner Malcolm Subban made 31 stops for the Bruins.
Portland 2, Bridgeport 1
Kyle Rau scored with a minute left in regulation time and John McFarland notched the game-winner ten seconds later as the Pirates stole two points from the Sound Tigers in Bridgeport. Rau’s team-leading ninth goal was set up by Cameron Gaunce and Rob Schremp. Garrett Wilson collected the lone helper on McFarland’s sixth. Former Florida Panthers player Bracken Kearns scored Bridgeport’s only goal late in the second period. Sebastian Collberg and Jesse Graham drew the assists on Kearns eleventh marker of the year. Sam Brittain made 26 saves to raise his record to 3-3. Stephon Williams took the loss, finishing with 31 stops for the Sound Tigers.
Portland (9-10-1) will face the Springfield Falcons on Wednesday night to open a four-game homestand.
