Pirates rout Springfield 5-1, extend winning streak to six

The Portland Pirates picked right up where they left off before Christmas, posting a convincing 5-1 over the Falcons in Springfield on Sunday.

Wade Megan opened the scoring at 15:14 of the first period, with the lone assist going to Shane Harper.

The Pirates blitzed the Flacons for three goals in the middle stanza to blow the game open.

Defenseman Jonathan Racine collected his first of the season, from Wayne Simpson and Brett Olson, at 5:52 to Portland up by two.

Rob Schremp and Chase Balisy set up John McFarland for his ninth 39 seconds later to extend the lead to three.

Harper notched his third goal, with the assists going to Racine and Greg McKegg, at 16:49 to complete the outburst.

Springfield finally solved Mike McKenna 5:24 into the final frame when Craig Cunningham scored from Jon DiSalvatore and Philip Samuelsson.

Pirates rookie Kyle Rau bagged his team-leading thirteenth goal to complete the scoring at the 11:20 mark. Harper and McKegg were credited with the helpers on Rau’s even-strength marker.

McKenna turned aside 35 shots to get the win, while Niklas Treutle made 32 saves in taking the loss.

Portland (16-11-1) will finish its two-game road trip in Hartford against the Wolf Pack on Tuesday night.
