Streaking Pirates complete sweep of IceCaps with 4-1 win

The Portland Pirates beat the St. John’s IceCaps 4-1 on Saturday night to complete a weekend sweep and post their tenth win in the last twelve games.

Garrett Wilson (5) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 2:57 mark of the first period.

John McFarland (13) added an unassisted shorthanded goal at 8:25 to put the Pirates up by two.

Portland extended its lead to three when Rocco Grimaldi (6) notched a power-play goal 2:29 later from Shane Harper and Sena Acolatse.

Wade Megan (4) scored another shorthanded goal, with lone assist credited to McFarland, 2:21 into the second period.

St. John’s Gabriel Dumont ended Mike McKenna‘s shutout bid with a power-play marker with 5:35 left in regulation time.

McKenna finished with 40 saves to win his tenth straight start. Eddie Pasquale stopped 4 of the 7 shots he faced before being yanked after the Grimaldi goal. Zachary Fucale turned away 23 of 24 shots in relief.

Portland (20-13-1) will host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday and Saturday at Cross Insurance Arena.
