Streaks come to an abrupt end in Penguins 5-0 drubbing of Pirates

Two first period power-play goals sparked the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins portlandto an easy 5-0 win over the Portland Pirates Saturday at Cross Insurance Arena. The loss snapped Portland’s six-game winning streak and goaltender Mike McKenna saw his 13-game run of victories come to an unceremonious end.

Scott Wilson and Tom Sestito scored power-play goals 1:56 to make the Pirates’ Rocco Grimaldi and John McFarland pay for their minors. Wilson’s goal came with both players sitting in the penalty box.

Josh Archibald scored the only goal of the second period and Sahir Gill and Tom Kostopoulos added on in the final frame. Kostopoulos’ marker was the Penguins third power-play tally of the night.

McKenna finished the game with 28 saves, while winner Tristan Jarry turned aside all 34 he faced from the Pirates. The shutout was the third of the season for Jarry, who boasts a most impressive 11-1 record.

The Pirates (24-14-1) will visit the Hartford Wolf Pack today at 3 p.m.
