Rampage Report: San Antonio picks up three of four points this week

The San Antonio Rampage played two games at home this week aginst the Abbotsford Heat and went 1-0-1 to collect their first points of 2014.

On Tuesday, the Rampage blasted the visiting Heat by a 5-1 count to snap a three-game losing streak. Abbotsford opened the scoring early in the first period on a Mark Cundari goal. John McFarland scored later in the frame with San Antonio on a power play to tie the game. Jon Matsumoto and Doug Janik were credited with the assists. Joey Crabb netted the eventual game-winner in the second period from Colby Robak and Dennis Urban with a power-play marker. The Rampage blew the game open with three third period goals. Bobby Butler scored unassisted, his eleventh, at the 4:32 mark. Robak notched his fourth of the season on a power play from Butler and Urban. Matt Gilroy fired home his third from Vincent Trocheck and Janik, again on the power play, to complete the scoring. Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 shots to get the win, while veteran Joey MacDonald got tagged with the loss. San Antonio went a stellar 4 for 5 on the power play.

Saturday’s rematch came after Abbotsford was thumped 5-0 by the Texas Stars on Friday. The Heat were able to salvage their trip to the Lone Star State by edging the Rampage 3-2 in overtime. It was the first overtime loss of the season for San Antonio. The Rampage opened the game with another power play goal when Vincent Trocheck tallied his twelfth from Michael Caruso and Matt Gilroy at 6:29 of the first period. Chad Billins replied for Abbotsford later in the frame. In the second, Garrett Wilson restored San Antonio’s lead with a power-play goal at 13:48. Doug Janik and Gilroy drew the helpers. The Heat trailed until midway through the third, when Josh Jooris beat Jacob Markstrom to tie the game. Ben Street would give the Heat the win 3:38 into the extra frame with his seventeenth of the season. Abbotsford’s Joni Ortio got the better of Markstrom, who finished with 23 saves, in goal.

San Antonio (13-20-1-3) will host the Utica Comets, Milwaukee Admirals and Rochester Americans this week. The club is now ten points out of a playoff spot.
