AHL: Barons Tie Series With 5-4 Overtime Win over Rampage

Coming into game two, the Rampage had a chance to take two games away from the top seeded Oklahoma City Barons. After all, the Rampage broke the Barons 24-0 record in the regular season and playoffs when scoring four goals, so anything was possible. The Barons drew first blood and took advantage of the Rampage inconsistent defense to hold the lead for two periods. However, the Barons had an inconsistency of their to overcome, what Oiler and Baron fans call the fade (an 8-10 minute stretch of time where the Barons stop playing good hockey). The Rampage fought back to take a 4-3 lead going into the final minute, until a Nolan Yonkman delay of game penalty gave the Barons a 6-on-4 chance to tie the game, which they did with ten second left in the game. The overtime period was the Barons vs. Jacob Marskstrom, as the Barons had ten shots in the extra period to the Rampage’s two. If not for the Rampage’s AHL playoffs best powerplay, the Barons would have skated away with an easy win. Post-game analysis and video after the jump…

The Good

  • The Powerplay: The Rampage continue to have the Calder Cup Playoffs best powerplay, scoring three goals with the extra man in game two on six chances. The Rampage lead the playoffs with 12 powerplay goals on 31 chances, 38.7%.
  • The Third Period: This was the period where the Rampage almost stole the game. Holding the Barons to only seven shots, the Rampage fought hard and got 12 shots on net, scoring on two of them. Including their only even strength goal.
  • Bill Thomas: Wild Man finished the game with two goals becoming the second multi-goal Rampage player in the playoffs, first being Jon Matsumoto. Lead the charge in the third with two breakaway chances. He finished the game with a minus-one and three shots.

The Bad

  • The First Period: The Barons were the hungry team and the defense failed to apply any real pressure on them and let them get away with 13 shots on goal. Making things worst was the offense, which had only five shots. The Rampage were lucky the game was tied at one after 20.
  • Quinton Howden: A minus-one with only one shot on goal and a slashing penalty in overtime.

The Ugly

  • Overtime: Again the defense failed to apply pressure on the Barons and they recorded ten shots on goal, and the game winner, in overtime. The Rampage didn’t challenge the Barons defense at all with only two shots in the extra period./
