Panthers ink F Reilly Smith to five-year extension

The Florida Panthers continued to lock up its young core, signing second line winger Reilly Smith to a five-year, $25M contract.

Smith’s new deal will kick in at the start of the 2017-18 season. He will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2022. The final year of his current contract has a AAV annual of $3,425,000.

The 25-year-old native of Etobicoke, ON scored a career-high 25 goals and added 25 assists in his first season with the Panthers after the club acquired him, and the contract of Marc Savard, from the Boston Bruins for Jimmy Hayes.

Smith led the Cats in playoff scoring with 4 goals and 4 assists in club’s opening round loss to the New York Islanders.

Selected in the third round (69th overall) of the 2009 Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars, Smith has totaled 150 points in 285 career NHL games.
