The San Antonio Rampage finished up a six-game homestand with a 1-1-1 record this week. The Rampage (14-7-2-0) fell in overtime to Utica before splitting a pair with the Chicago Wolves. San Antonio remained in second place in the West Division, two points behind the Oklahoma City Barons.
Comets 5, Rampage 4 (OT)
San Antonio dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to the visiting Utica Comets on Friday night. Dustin Jeffrey scored a goal and added three assists for the Comets. Utica opened the scoring with a first period power-play goal from Alexandre Grenier. The Comets added to their lead early in the second when Ronalds Kenins tallied at the 1:04 mark. Brett Olson bagged an unassisted shorthanded breakaway goal 1:36 later to get the Rampage on the board. Utica’s power play struck again later in the frame with Bobby Sanguinetti lighting the lamp at 7:04 to make it 3-1. Steven Kampfer fired home another shorthanded marker for San Antonio with the assists going to Connor Brickley and Drew Shore. It was the first time the Rampage scored two shorthanded goals in a game since April 3, 2010. Alex Petrovic tied the game late in the second with a power-play goal. Shore and Mark Mancari combined to set up Petrovic’s second of the season. The Silver and Black took the lead at 8:45 of the third when Logan Shaw tipped in a Brickley rebound. Defenseman Blake Parlett, returning after a five-game absence, drew the second helper. Jeffrey scored with 3:20 remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime where blueliner Alex Biega notched the game-winner at 3:17. Utica’s Joacim Eriksson made 33 stops to post the win, while Dan Ellis finished with 29 saves in a rocky outing. In addition to Parlett, Quinton Howden and Shane O’Brien returned to lineup as well.
Rampage 2, Wolves 1
The Rampage bounced back from the tough loss to the Comets with a 2-1 win over the Chicago Wolves on Sunday. Dan Ellis stopped 31 of 32 shots to lead the Silver and Black to victory. Shane O’Brien opened the scoring with his fifth goal at 2:37 of the first period. Quinton Howden and Steven Kampfer collected the assists. It was Howden’s first point of the season. The Wolves countered later in the frame when Shane Harper scored a power-play goal from Philip McRae and Dmitrij Jaskin. Mark Mancari tallied at 5:05 of the second period to restore San Antonio’s lead. Drew Shore and Connor Brickley got the helpers on the eventual winner. Matt Climie made 23 saves for Chicago.
Wolves 6, Rampage 2
Chicago avenged Sunday’s defeat to the Silver and Black with a 6-2 rout on Tuesday. Drew Shore scored the only goal of the first period, from Mark Mancari and Connor Brickley, to put San Antonio up 1-0. The assist extended Mancari’s point-streak to nine games. The Wolves evened the game early in the second when Ty Rattie bagged his 14th of the season. Blake Parlett tallied to put the Rampage back ahead 1:23 later. Rocco Grimaldi and Shore picked up the helpers. Shore set a new franchise record by recording at least one assist in seven straight games. Chicago blew the game open with three goals to close out the frame. Dmitrij Jaskin, Jani Hakanpaa, and Terry Broadhurst all beat Dan Ellis to make it 5-2 for the visitors. Pat Cannone chased Ellis, who finished with 17 saves, in the third period to complete the scoring. Matt Climie made 28 saves to post the win for Chicago. Michael Houser turned aside the only shot he faced in relief. The loss was San Antonio’s first in regulation since November 7.
The Rampage begin a four-game road trip with a pair of games against the Iowa Wild on Thursday and Friday in Des Moines.
