Thunderbirds split weekend set with win over Devils and loss to Bruins

The Springfield Thunderbirds (15-14-5-2) remained in sixth place in the AHL’s Atlantic Division after dropping games to Albany and Providence this weekend.

Springfield 3, Albany 2 (OT)

Shane Harper scored 1:45 into overtime, from Brody Sutter and Matt MacKenzie, to give the Thunderbirds a 3-2 road win on Friday. Albany’s Jacob MacDonald opened the scoring eleven minutes into the first period with a shorthanded goal. Dylan MacIlrath tied the tilt at 11:58 of the second with his first of the year from Sutter and Anthony Greco. Ben Sexton put the Devils back on top 2:35 later. Springfield’s MacKenzie scored his first of the season with 52 seconds left in regulation, with Greco picking up his second helper, to send the game to the extra session. Reto Berra made 24 stops to get the win while Mackenzie Blackwood made 16 saves for Albany.

Providence 1, Springfield 0

Anton Khudobin stopped 26 shots and Jordan Szwarz scored the game’s only goal on the power play with seventeens seconds in regulation to give the Bruins a 1-0 win over the Thunderbirds. Wayne Simpson and Tommy Cross drew the helpers on the late game-winner. Josh Brown was sent off for tripping with 42 seconds left, setting the stage for the Szwarz. Reto Berra finished with 18 saves for Springfield.

The Thunderbirds will host the Lehigh Valley Phantoms today at 1:05 p.m.
