Thunderbirds edge Sound Tigers 2-1 for first win

The Springfield Thunderbirds bounced back from an opening night defeat in Lehigh Valley with a 2-1 road win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Sunday afternoon at Webster Bank Arena.

After a scoreless first period, defenseman MacKenzie Weegar lit the lamp at the 3:50 mark of the second with the assists going to Brody Sutter and Logan Shaw.

Sutter scored the eventual game-winner 8:52 into the final frame from Weegar and fellow newcomer to the Florida Panthers organization Tim Bozon.

Bozon was acquired from Montreal for defenseman Jonathan Racine and Sutter came over from Carolina for forward Connor Brickley right before the start of the season.

The host Sound Tigers finally got on the board with 3:12 remaining in regulation when Kane Lafranchise beat Thunderbirds netminder Reto Berra.

Berra, who was making his first start of the season, finished with 17 saves to give the franchise once known as the Portland Pirates its first win as the Springfield Thunderbirds.

The T-Birds had two penalty shots during the game, by Kyle Rau and Rihards Bukarts, but both failed by beat Stephon Williams, who ended the afternoon with 23 stops.

Springfield went 0 for 8 on the power play.
