Things ain’t workin’ out down on the farm. After dropping a 4-3 decision in overtime to Bridgeport on Tuesday, the Springfield Thunderbirds lost all three games this weekend to fall to 17-23-7-2. The Thunderbirds are now 19 points out of a playoff spot.
Hartford 3, Springfield 2
Adam Tambellini scored all three goals and Brandon Halverson made 32 saves as the visiting Wolf Pack edged the Thunderbirds 3-2. Denis Malgin opened the scoring, from Jayce Hawryluk and Dryden Hunt, 4:55 into the first period. Hawryluk put Springfield on top 2-1 12:30 into the final frame before Tambellini scored the final two goals of the game. Mackenzie Weegar and Ian McCoshen drew the assists on Hawryluk’s fifth. Reto Berra took the loss, finishing the tilt with 13 stops.
Utica 2, Springfield 1
Brendan Gaunce and Curtis Valk scored eight seconds apart early in the first period and Richard Bachman made 31 saves as the visiting Comets held off the Thunderbirds for a 2-1 win at MassMutual Center. Ian McCoshen scored Springfield’s only goal, from Kyle Rau and Matt MacKenzie at the 17:17 mark of the opening period. The goal came with the Thinderbirds on a power play. Mike McKenna made 21 saves and saw his record drop to 6-10-7.
Providence 4, Springfield 1
The Thunderbirds took to the road on Sunday and were soundly beaten 4-1 by the P-Bruins. Tommy Cross opened the scoring with a power-play goal 13:03 into the first period. Noel Acciari scored twice in the second period to put Providence up by three. Michael Downing lit the lamp to get Springfield on the board at 6:24 of the third. The assists on the goal went to Jayce Hawryluk and Dylan McIlrath. Acciari completed his hat-trick into an empty net with six seconds left. Malcolm Subban made 28 saves to get the win, Reto Berra finished with 26 stops for the Thunderbirds.
Springfield is off until Friday when they play host to Utica at MassMutual Center.
