First period swoon dooms Thunderbirds in 3-2 loss to Americans

The Springfield Thunderbirds had its two-game winning streak come to a close with a 3-2 loss to the Rochester Americans at MassMutual Center on Sunday.

Springfield opened the scoring at the 12:36 mark of the first period when Stephen MacAulay lit the lamp with the assists going to Tim Bozon and Shane Harper. Harper is just back from a stint with the Florida Panthers.

The lead only lasted for a 1:56, with Mac Bennett getting the tying goal from Eric Cornel and Taylor Fedun.

Later in the period, Nick Baptiste scored a pair of goals 48 seconds apart to put the Amerks up 3-1.

Cal O’Reilly combined with Cole Schneider to set up the first and then drew the only helper on the second.

The Thunderbirds cut the deficit down to one on captain Brent Regner’s first of season  6:07 into the third period. Assists on the Regner tally went to Paul Thompson and Bozon.

Rochester goaltender Linus Ullmark shut the door the rest, finishing with 25 saves to get the win.

Mike McKenna made 19 stops and saw his record drop to 2-3-1 on the season.
