Thunderbirds post wins over Baby Pens and Sound Tigers

After having its three-game winning streak ended by Bridgeport on Friday, the Springfield Thunderbirds (5-2) bounced back with wins over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday and the aforementioned Sound Tigers on Sunday.

Thunderbirds 2, Penguins 1 (OT)

Springfield closed out its first homestand of the season with a 2-1 overtime win over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The Baby Pens got on the board first when Reid McNeil lit the lamp with 1:47 remaining in the opening period. The T-Birds tied the game 10:25 into final frame with a power-play goal from Paul Thompson. Thompson’s second of the year was set up by Chase Balisy and Jakub Kindl. Balisy came up with winner, unassisted, 1:30 into the extra session, beating Tristan Jarry to give Springfield the bonus point. Mike McKenna delivered a quality start, stopping 27 shots to post the win.

Thunderbirds 2, Sound Tigers 0

The T-Birds hit the road and exacted a bit of revenge on Bridgeport for Friday’s loss courtesy of 28-saves shutout from Reto Berra. The shutout was Berra’s second of the season. The veteran keeper is now 3-1 with a 1.50 GAA and .939 save percentage. Juho Lammikko bagged his first professional goal, from Anthony Greco, at the 10:21 mark of the first period. Logan Shaw clinched the game with an empty-net tally with two seconds remaining in regulation. Shaw’s goal was assisted by Ryan Horvat and Chase Balisy.

On the slate for this upcoming weekend are games against Hershey (home), Lehigh Valley (away) and Binghamton (home).
