Baby Pens post 5-3 win over slumping Springfield

The Springfield Thunderbirds resumed play with a 5-3 road loss to the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins Tuesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.

MacKenzie Weegar opened the scoring with an unassisted power-play goal 3:33 into the first period.

The Penguins equalized 2:10 later, when Jake Guentzel lit the lamp from David Warsofsky.

Springfield’s power play clicked a second time at the 9:18 mark. Tim Bozon got the goal, his fourth, with the assists going to Greg McKegg and Mike Sgarbossa.

Guentzel, the AHL’s leading goalscorer, notched his sixteenth of the season with 31 seconds left in the frame to forge another tie and then completed the hat trick 1:17 into the second period to put the Baby Pens ahead.

Former Florida Panthers prospect Garrett Wilson tallied 54 second later to give the home side a two-goal lead.

Weegar scored his second of the night, and sixth of the campaign, with 3:19 left in middle stanza from Anthony Greco and Ian McCoshen to halve the deficit.

Another ex-Panther, Cameron Gaunce completed the scoring with an empty-net goal with 17 seconds left in regulation.

Mike McKenna took the loss, stopping 35 shots, while winner Tristan Jarry finished with 20 saves.
