AHL Recap: Sound Tigers snap Thunderbirds winning streak

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers skated to a 5-2 home ice win over the Springfield Thunderbirds last night, ending Florida’s farm team’s six-game winning streak and handing the T-Birds its first loss in regulation of the young season.

Tom Kuhnhackl scored twice and added an assist in his first AHL appearance of the season, and Josh Ho-Sang, Michael Dal Colle and Mike Sislo each contributed a goal and assist.

Both of Springfield’s goals came on the power play, with Dryden Hunt tying the game at one in first period from Jayce Hawryluk and Anthony Greco. Joel Lowry scored from Patrick Bajkov and Jacob MacDonald to cut the deficit to 4-2 in the third period, before Kuhnhackl notched his second of the night 23 seconds later to put the game away for good.

Chris Driedger took the loss, stopping 29 of the 34 he faced. Driedger is now 2-1-1 while filling in for Michael Hutchinson, who should be back with Springfield soon.

On Friday, the Thunderbirds got another big-time performance from Samuel Montembeault, who stopped 40 shots to lead his club to a 3-2 win in the first game of the home-and-home with Bridgeport.

Matt Mangene scored his first of the season to open the scoring, Paul Thompson tallied a power-play goal in the second, and Ludwig Bystrom’s third period goal was the eventual game-winner.

MacDonald registered primary assists on the first two goals, and Lowry, Bajkov, Bobby Farnham and Jake Horton also contributed helpers.

The Thunderbirds (7-1-0-2) will continue its three-game road trip Friday against Lehigh Valley.
