Thursday Caterwaul: Men’s Olympic Hockey – Day Two

After two Group C games yesterday, today is the day the Olympics really get started for most hockey fans in South Florida and the rest of North America. The two Florida Panthers players taking part, Aleksander Barkov and Tomas Kopecky, are both in action, as are Team USA and Team Canada.

Today’s Games

  • Group A/

United States vs. Slovakia – Shayba Arena 7:30 a.m. EST (NBCSN)

Jonathan Quick will get the start in goal for the Americans.

Russia vs. Slovenia – Bolshoy Ice Dome 7:30 a.m. EST (MSNBC)

  • Group B/

Finland vs. Austria – Bolshoy Ice Dome 3:00 a.m. EST (NBCSN)

Canada vs. Norway – Bolshoy Ice Dome 12:00 p.m. EST (USA)

Carey Price will start for Canada. Roberto Luongo will get the nod in the next game against Austria.

Sweden 4 Czech Republic 2

Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson scored twice, and Patrik Berglund and Henrik Zetterberg also tallied for the Swedes, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead, chasing Czech starter Jakub Kovar after the third goal. Former Panther Alexander Salak did well in relief. Marek Zidlicky and Jaromir Jagr potted the goals for the Czechs.

Switzerland 1 Latvia 0

AHLer Simon Moser scored with 7.9 seconds to lift the Swiss team past scrappy Latvia. Jonas Hiller made 21 saves to post the shutout, while Edgars Masalskis turned aside 38 shots in a very impressive performance for the losers.
