Drafted in the third round of the 2014 draft after coming up through Finnish club team Assat Pori’s junior system, Lammikko is a speedy two-way winger with good playmaking skills and size.
From Hockey’s Future:
Lammikko is frequently compared to 2011 Chicago first-round pick Joel Armia since both are tall, right-handed shots and both are from the same Assat club. Those comparisons are a bit erroneous. More of a late bloomer than Armia, Lammikko is still developing as a prospect. Dominant offensively at the junior levels, he has yet to put up the numbers that Armia did at the same age for the Assat men’s team. At the same time, Lammikko’s defensive game with Kingston has been more advanced than Armia’s was at the same age. In addition to his obvious physical attributes, the things that have drawn interest from scouts are Lammikko’s skating ability, passing skills, and anticipation. Agility and physical strength are areas that will need to continue to develop; not unusual for taller players his age.

A winger with promising size, Lammikko works hard at both ends of the ice and is strong in small spaces and corners. He is a decent skater with good stickhandling and playmaking ability. Lammikko has been an eager shooter in the juniors, but seems more apt as a set-up man with his vision and IQ. He is also characterized by good decision-making and sound defensive play.
The 19-year-old came to North America last season and suited up for the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs, where he was a teammate of Florida’s 2015 first-round choice, Lawson Crouse. In 64 games with the Frontenacs, Lammikko scored 18 goals and added 26 assists to finish fourth on the team in scoring. He led the club in plus/minus with a +23 rating; an impressive number considering Kingston was a middling team that didn’t score too many goals. In the playoffs, the young Finn put up 2 points (1G/1A) in the Frontenacs four-game, first round loss to the North Bay Battalion.
This season, Lammikko is expected to head back to Finland and compete against men, with Assat’s top-level Liiga squad, to further his development. Lammikko has proven he can put up points in juniors, now it’s time for him to show he can round out his game by doing it at the next level. Another year of seasoning should have the big winger ready for the North American pro game, either at the AHL or NHL level. A good spot for Lammikko in the future would be playing alongside shoot-first center Nick Bjugstad, where his skill set could be utilized to the fullest.
