Capitals vanquish Golden Knights to capture the Stanley Cup

Twenty years after being swept by the Detroit Red Wings, the Washington Capitals captured its first Stanley Cup in franchise history with a rousing 4-3 comeback win over the expansion Vegas Golden Knights. The Capitals won four straight games after dropping the series-opener.

Lars Eller notched the game-opening goal with 7:37 left in regulation after Devante Smith-Pelly tied the score with a lunging effort 2:31 seconds earlier. The goal was Smith-Pelly’s 7th, equaling his regular season output.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 15th goal of the postseason, breaking John Druce’s franchise record, and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

Jakub Vrana tallied the other Washington goal, while Nate Schmidt, David Perron and former Panther Reilly Smith scored the goals for the Golden Knights.
