AHL: Markstrom posts shutout to lead visiting Rampage past Griffins

The San Antonio Rampage surged back to the .500 mark (21-21-3-5) with their fourth straight victory. After winning 2-1 in a shootout last night, the Silver and Black completed a weekend sweep of Grand Rapids with a 3-0 shutout over the Griffins.

The win raised the Rampage’s record on their current ten-game road trip to 4-0-0-1.

After a scoreless first period, veteran defender Matt Gilroy opened the scoring with his sixth of the season, on a rebound, at 1:46 of the second. John McFarland and Joey Crabb combined to set up the goal.

Later in the frame, forward Garrett Wilson notched his tenth goal from Bobby Butler and defenseman Ryan Whitney to stake San Antonio to a two-goal lead.

Drew Shore beat Grand Rapids keeper Petr Mrazek early in the third period to complete the scoring. Shore has now notched a goal in three straight games.

Butler and Gilroy got the helpers on Shore’s fourth goal of the campaign to finish with the game with two points apiece.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 28 shots to post his first shutout of the year. It was the Alien’s sixth career AHL whitewashing. The win, his second straight, improved Markstrom’s record to 10-10-3 on the season.

The Rampage’s month-long road odyssey continues with a Monday afternoon tilt in Hamilton against the Bulldogs.
