Checkers split games against Springfield and Hartford

The Charlotte Checkers split its two games over weekend as they wind down the AHL regular season and look towards the Calder Cup Playoffs.

On Saturday, the Checkers doubled up the Springfield Thunderbirds by a 6-3 count at Bojangles Coliseum in their home finale.

First Star of the Game Will Lockwood scored a goal and added three assists to power the offense. Also lighting the lamp for Charlotte were Patrick Giles, Ben Steeves, Mackie Samoskevich, Gerry Mayhew and Rasmus Asplund.

Steeves’ goal was his first as a professional.

Justin Sourdif also dished out three assists, Patrick Khodorenko collected two helpers and Michael Benning, Casey Fitzgerald and Zac Dalpe each had one.

Magnus Hellberg stopped 25 of 28 shots to pick up the win.

The Checkers hit the road on Sunday and were beaten 5-2 by the Hartford Wolf Pack at XL Center.

After Fitzgerald opened the scoring 9:43 into the second period the Wolf Pack ran off five straight goals before Asplund stopped the bleeding with his ninth goal, from Samoskevich and Benning, with 6:47 remaining in the game.

It was a rough outing for Spencer Knight, who surrendered all five goals on 25 shots.

The Checkers (38-24-7) will finish the season on the road this week with two games in Hershey (on Wednesday and Saturday) before they face Lehigh Valley on Sunday.
