The Charlotte Checkers returned to North Carolina after finishing up a four-game trip to Cailfornia by sweeping the San Diego Gulls.

In the first meeting between the two clubs on Wednesday, Patrick Khodorenko scored 2:47 into overtime, with the lone assist going to Zac Dalpe, to give the Checkers a 3-2 victory.

After Ben King’s unassisted marker gave the Gulls the lead in the first period, Rasmus Asplund tied it midway through the second, with the helpers going to Gerry Mayhew and Lucas Carlsson.

Patrick Giles scored 4:26 later, from Casey Fitzgerald and WIll Lockwood, to give Charlotte a brief lead before Pavol Regenda equalized with 2:11 left in the frame.

Ludovic Waeber made 24 saves to get the win while Gulls keeper Calle Clang stopped 27 shots.

In Friday’s rematch, Dalpe scored the only goal of the game 12:57 into the first period and Waeber turned aside all 21 San Diego shots to post his first shutout in the AHL as the Checkers won the penalty-filled affair 1-0 to finish the road trip with a 3-1 record after they split the first two games against the San Jose Barracuda.

The goal was Dalpe’s third of the season and the assists were credited to Ryan McAllister and Khodorenko.

Waeber now sports a perfect 4-0 record, 1.97 GAA and .923 save percentage.

The Checkers (9-4) will open a six-game homestand on Monday when they host the Cleveland Monsters.
