Playing under Andrew Brunette, who made his NHL coaching debut after being promoted from assistant to interim coach following the resignation of Joel Quenneville in the midst of the Chicago Blackhawks’ sexual assault coverup scandal, the Cats saw Aleksander Barkov (4 goals, 9 points this year) get two markers, including the winner with one-and-a-half minute remaining in the extra session. Eetu Luostarinen (2 goals, 2 points) also scored for Florida, which has now won 14 consecutive regular-season contests, dating back to last season.
The Boston Bruins (3-3-0) took home zero points throughout a back-to-back road set during midweek (0-2-0), dropping two decisions in a matter of 24 hours. Charlie Coyle (2 goals, 4 points this year) opened the scoring midway through the first period against the Florida Panthers at FLA Live Arena on Wednesday before the hosts tallied four unanswered snipes subsequently. The following evening, meanwhile, brought the season’s first blanking for the B’s, who were shut out with a count of 3-0 by the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena on Thursday.
