Derick Brassard we hardly knew ye…
As expected, the Florida Panthers shed the 31-year-old veteran pending UFA forward, shipping him to the Colorado Avalanche for a third round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
The Avalanche will also receive a sixth round pick in 2020 from the Cats unless they sign Brassard to an extension.
Oddly enough, the two teams will meet tonight in Denver, so a short trip for Brassard to join his new club.
In ten games with the Panthers after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins, Brassard scored one goal, versus the Washington Capitals, and added three assists.
The Cats beat the Deadline deadline and sent spare parts defensemen Bogdan Kislevich to the Winnipeg Jets for a seventh-round pick in 2021 and Chris Wideman to Pittsburgh for AHLer Jean-Sebastien Dea.
Kiselevich fell out of favor with coach Bob Boughner (despite playing pretty well to most eyes) and only suited up for 32 games after coming over from the KHL this summer. The 29-year-old Russian leaves Sunrise with 8 assists, 12 PIM and a respectable -3 rating, considering how bad the Panthers have been 5-on-5 this season.
Wideman played one game for the Cats before he was assigned to the Springfield Thunderbirds where he put up 13 points in 16 games.
Dea is a 25-year-old forward with 29 NHL games to his credit. This season he has spent most of his time playing in the American League with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. He will be an Group 6 unrestricted free agent after the season.
Florida did add another piece to the organization, acquiring prospect forward Cliff Pu from the Carolina Hurricanes.
Pu, who was drafted in the third round by Buffalo in 2016, has struggled in his first professional season. In 44 games with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, the 20-year-old, has scored just one goal to go along with 5 assists. He is signed through the 2020-21 season.
