Thursday Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Open Forum

Art Ross Trophy winner Connor McDavid scored all three goals as the Edmonton Oilers shut out provincial rival Calgary at Rogers Place.

Calder Trophy winner Auston Matthews scored a goal and added two assists as the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs routed the Winnipeg Jets by a 7-2 count.

The St. Louis Blues edged the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 overtime. Alex Pietrangelo notched his second of the game 1:15 into the extra session to give the visiting Blues the win.

Philadelphia Wayne Simmons matched McDavid’s hat trick with one of own in San Jose as the Flyers beat the Sharks 5-3 in the late game.

The Florida Panthers will open its season Friday night versus the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena.

Brandon Pirri, a late cut from Panthers’ camp, was signed to a two-way deal by the Vegas Golden Knights. Pirri was placed on waivers and will report to the AHL Chicago Wolves if he clears.
