Thursday Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Offseason Open Forum

Ross Colton scored the game’s only goal at the 13:27 mark of the second period, off assists from David Savard and Ryan McDonagh, and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped all 22 shots in the Tampa Bay Lightning’s 1-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final.

The shutout was Vasilevskiy’s fifth of the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs and fourth to win a series. He was voted winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as postseason MVP. Going back to last season, he has posted five staight shutouts in clinching games.

Tampa Bay is the ninth team to repeat as Stanley Cup champions, and the first since the Pittsburgh Penguins did it in 2016 and 2017.

The Lightning has not lost back-to-back games in the playoffs in two years. They eliminated the Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders before upending the upstart Canadiens.

Carey Price finished the game with 29 saves for the Habs, who only managed to score eight times in the four games to one series loss.

Nikita Kucherov led the postseason in scoring for a second straight season with 32 points (8G/24A), while Brayden Point did the same in the goals department, finishing with 14 in 23 games, the same number he had in 2020.
